How to remove a label in Gmail is our concern for those that do not know how to do this. First of all, what is Google’s label? Labels are Google versions of the files. They do everything the files do, but you can apply more than one label to a message. After creating a label, you can change the name and color of the label. You can also delete any label you create.

Gmail labels are the online alternative to files found in standalone email programs. Although emails are not stored separately, the labels allow you to sort them as if they were. As useful as labels are to keep email organized, they are sometimes a nuisance. You can easily delete them on your Gmail page or through your Gmail settings.

Access the Label Menu

On the left side of the Gmail page, hover over the label you want to remove and go to the drop-down menu by clicking the down arrow. In the menu, click “Remove Label” to remove the label from the list. This also removes the label from all associated messages.

Gmail Settings

You can also edit and delete labels in your Gmail settings menu. Click the gear button near the top right corner of your Gmail page, scroll to “Settings,” and click “Tags.” Find the appropriate label in the list and click “Remove.”

Edit a name and a label location

In the left sidebar of Google Mail, hover over the label you want to edit and click the drop-down arrow.
In the drop-down menu, select “Edit”. The “Edit Label” window should appear.
To change the name of the label, in the “Label Name:” field, type the new name.
For the label to become a sub-label, check the box labeled “Nest label under:” and from the drop-down menu, choose the label to which you want the sub-label to be associated.

Change a label color

In the left sidebar of Google Mail, hover over the label you want to edit, and click the drop-down arrow.
Under the drop-down menu, select “Label Color”. A color palette should appear.
In the color palette, click the color that you want to apply to your label. For more color options or to change the color of the label text, click “Add Custom Color”.

Delete a label

In the left sidebar of Google Mail, hover over the label you want to edit and click the drop-down arrow.
In the drop-down menu, select “Delete Label”> Click Delete.
